Project Launch - SEAL Karamoja
Background
In the project area Karamoja in North-Eastern Uganda, the majority of the population are living from subsistence agriculture. Out of lack of an alternative livelihood, many people are moving to neighbouring districts, not because they want to, but because they don’t have an alternative.
Uganda’s education system faces a lot of challenges. There are major difficulties in funding and the system does not provide school leavers with the necessary competencies needed for employment. Added to this, the system does not cater for the large number of school dropouts from primary and secondary education.
Given the above scenario, alternation livelihood in Karamoja region is an important issue that has to be considered and addressed.
Description
The overall objective of the project is to create a sustainable environment that leads to employment and income opportunities for young men and women living in difficult conditions in three rural districts of Karamoja (Abim, Nakapiripirit and Moroto).
The project, which is being co-funded by the European Commission, contributes to poverty reduction through adopted skills and entrepreneurship training thus enabling young adults, both men and women, to start a professional career. By working closely with local partners, the project seeks to ingrain within the region thus ensuring sustainability.
By training practical skills and delivering support to small business start-ups, Swisscontact with its principal partners will contribute to the improvement of employability, thereby providing sustainable livelihoods for young adults from rural Karamoja. In addition to an enhanced livelihood, success in working life also means appreciation and promotes self-esteem.
