Uganda
Local Skills Development in the Karamoja Region co-funded by the European Commission
Background - Uganda is considered a ‘least developed countries’ by the United Nations. The implementation area of the project is Karamoja, in the North East of the country where 85% of the population derive their livelihood from livestock and agricultural produce. Due to the long dry spells and lack of adequate water for livestock, most people lead a semi nomadic life style, often having to move to neighbouring districts because of lack of an alternative livelihood. Because of major challenges in the education system, mainly the lack of funding, the system does not provide school leavers with the necessary competencies needed for employment. Furthermore, there are a large number of school drop-outs in both primary and secondary education, this is particularly applies in rural areas such as Karamoja.
The Project - the goal of this project is to enhance the income generation potential of Karamoja’s youth through skills and entrepreneurship training. Swisscontact with its principal partners contributes to the improvement of employability and thereby of sustainable livelihoods of young adults from rural Karamoja through provision of practical skills and support to small business start up. We work very closely and build synergies with the local governments in order to institutionalize skills development within the region, this entails site development and capacity building of partners to provide support services in areas of entrepreneurship training, life skills and access to financial services. Overall 600 young people benefit from skills training, 50% of which are female; 11 Learning centres are established and equipped and at least 60 communities are mobilised and sensitized.
