Kosovo

Advancement and modernisation of vocational training

Background – Kosovo is slowly recovering from the war in 1999. One of the big challenges the country is facing is not only the strengthening of the local economy but also the reconstruction of educational and vocational training centres. In the past, state enterprises were responsible for the provision of most of the practical education, but today only the theoretical training methods prevail.

The project
– It is our goal to modernise and strengthen the vocational training system in Kosovo in a sustainable manner. In order to achieve our aims, we closely work together with respective state institutions and vocational training schools.

The project focuses in the first place on practical apprenticeship and has in addition developed modular learning projects for technical careers in the economical and administrational sector as well as concepts for virtual training companies. The development of the vocational training concepts and the training of the Kosovarian teachers are conducted by Swiss and German experts with backgrounds as teachers and with lots of working experience in the educational sector. The mediation of vocational standards is the key to success.

Although the focus of the project is put on the formal three years of vocational training it also supports schools, which are offering condensed learning projects to adults. Courses that were conducted in the past, e.g. on behalf of the Kosovarian electricity company KEK, affirm the quality and the market orientation of the courses.

Since 2006 the project has been supporting the establishment of an e-learning system for vocational schools. Standardised e-learning courses, like the European computer-based driving license ECLD, are offered via an internet platform. Where there is no internet access available, the courses can be taken with the help of individually developed CDs for self-study. Subject matters are regularly expanded in the presence of a teacher and applied in practice.

With the support of the project the schools have stepped out of the sideline and present themselves and their learning results self-confidently at industry and consumer exhibitions in Pristina, establish networks with companies and herewith stimulate mutual communication concerning quality and market orientation of the apprenticeship. In addition internships are arranged as well as advanced training courses for employees of medium enterprises.
