Air purity

Background – Urban population growth and growing economical activities in the past years led to a rapid increase of air pollution in some Peruvian cities. In some urban areas about 80% of the air pollution descends from antiquated and deficiently maintained vehicles. The remaining 20% are caused by the use of dated technology in industry.

The project – The “Regional Project for clean Air” (PRAL) supports the national program to improve the air quality in Peruvian cities und to reduce the negative effects of pollution on the population’s health. A main part of PRAL is the creation of national standards for air purity. At the same time local institutions responsible for air quality are strengthened and the development of sustainable models for the cities of Cusco and Arequipa is advanced. Our aim is to improve the circumstances for the urban population, especially the children, the pregnant women and the elderly. Thus we cooperate with the city’s authorities and the Ministry of Production. The government adopted a national policy for the improvement of air quality that supports the program in the cities. The population was clarified about the grave consequences of air pollution and participates in the surveillance of the local air purity plans.
