Nicaragua

Modernisation of vocational schools

Background – Nicaragua is the second poorest country in Latin America and highly indebted. The economical state of Nicaragua is shaped by the dependency on the USA market. One central problem is the high rate of un- and underemployment concerning half of the population. This is partly due to the low quality of apprenticeship offered. Besides the state-owned institutions exist around 200 private vocational schools, which mainly focus on apprenticeships with low costs for investment as for example accounting or administration. The Salesian Centres as private institutions stand almost alone with the offer of mainly technical careers. They aim particularly for youth from poor families and arbitrate Christian values alongside the apprenticeship. The Salesian Centres feature efficient organisation, qualified and motivated personnel and do have a sound reputation among employers. Expanding the apprenticeship offer of the Salesian Centres contributes importantly to the career opportunities particularly of poor youth.

The project – Within the project five selected Salesian Centres are advanced. The infrastructure and equipment of these centres are improved according to the respective needs. The quality of the apprenticeship is in addition raised, existing buildings renovated and partially new buildings erected. For the newly built and renovated garages modern machines, tools and teaching material will be provided. To improve the quality of the education, apprenticeship curricula will be updated or developed. We further offer the instructors training courses in the technical and the pedagogical sector.
