Background – Vietnam’s current economy holds its roots in a time when military action and political unrest commanded the country. With the reunification in 1976 a centrally planned economy was also introduced in the south. However, already in the eighties the lack of Soviet support and the US trade embargo led to a grave economical crisis. In the course of market reforms central planning and agricultural collectivism have been abandoned since then and the country has found its way out of economical isolation. Despite a boom Vietnam’s economy still has a shortfall, especially in apprenticeship. Furthermore a huge share of the (rural) population has not profited and still faces poverty.

The project – The main aim is to give socially disadvantaged youth with a low level of education access into professional life showing them a way out of poverty. This is achieved by means of a concrete and favourably prized education offer (short-term courses of three month to one year duration) in some centres supported by local authorities. Since 1994 20 vocational schools have been developed and supported, until 2008 another ten will be added. This contributes to the sustainable strengthening of the national apprenticeship system.

Swisscontact advances the schools with education and further training of the teachers and offers support in the design of teaching material and curricula. We also equip the garages with modern machines and advice the administration in questions of school management. The apprenticeships are geared to local needs and were developed further in cooperation with the employers. During the courses practical knowledge about health and AIDS prevention is also taught. The involvement of young women is especially advanced especially and the apprenticeship centres assist the graduates actively in their job search.
