Background – The Vietnamese capital of Hanoi has to struggle with grave air pollution. The authorities’ ability to deal with such problems is limited. The law is insufficient and its conversion monitored poorly, so the equipment of most cars does not meet international standards. Furthermore no reliable data about the exact degree of air pollution is available.

The project – Our aim is to abandon further aggravation of the air in Hanoi and surroundings. In achieving this four fields of activity are of utmost importance: Firstly, it is necessary to reform the law to ensure that the authorities have a sound basis for their activities. Beyond that we have to sensitize the population to handle the causes of air pollution reasonable. Pilot projects with environmentally sound vehicles and industrial plants have to demonstrate alternatives.Last but not least a reliable data acquisition is essential to secure the progress already made. In this area we work closely with the Vietnamese authorities and the population, amongst others with a program for the reduction of vehicle emissions.
