Background – Unlike to the infrastructure the local economy has difficulties to recover after the tsunami. There is a lack of knowledge and experience for rebuilding destroyed small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and for creating new companies. The administration and social problems hinder the economical development. Furthermore, the newly erupting war between the rebel movement “Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam” (LTTE) and Sri Lanka’s governmental army adds further damage to the weak economy in the northern and eastern parts of the island.

The project – Swisscontact advances the rebuilding of SMEs and their market in ten villages of the districts Ampara and Batticaloa with apprenticeship and further training for example. Here the focus is put on the careers that are most important for the region as well as management topics. Parish halls were equipped to serve the population as communication centres and to support recently established enterprises with premises. The SMEs receive consultancy, amongst others to execute the requirements of micro credits. The project confronts social problems (such as alcoholism or domestic violence) with activities for public information and discreet care of single imperiling or dangerous persons. Around 2500 people profit directly or indirectly from the project in the north and east of Sri Lanka, for example by getting a job in one of the rebuilt SMEs or by expanding their professional skills, thus increasing their chances to earn a sufficient income.
