Sri Lanka
Economical empowerment of women
Background - Sri Lanka was one of the countries the 2004 tsunami affected the most. Thus the economical rebuilding and the overhauling of buildings and infrastructure are urgent. At the same time it is important to secure the income of families concerned by the tsunami. The life resources of concerned women and their families in the districts of Matara and Trincomalee have to be rebuilt. Through the advancement of sustainable employment, self-dependency and access to financial services women are supported. Beyond that we offer them and their families psychological and judicial consultancy.
The project - Swisscontact has implemented two production units in Matara and Trincomalee and has assigned the lead to two local non-governmental organisations. Competitive Products were developed and sustainable sales opportunities found. The victims are relieved from their pre-tsunami debts and possibilities for the funding of a re-start explained. We also advance partner NGOs in introducing psychological and judicial consultancy for involved communities.
The women are enabled to take up their former businesses or to introduce new possibilities of employment, granting that they are able to live independently from external help as soon as possible. This aim we persue by the implementation of new production units, but also by debt relief and the increase of newly given credits. Furthermore the women receive psychological and judicial support and management consultancy according to their needs. The Ameropa foundation contributes financially to the construction of the production unit in Matara.
