Nepal

Apprenticeship of vocational school teachers

Background – Although there were some vocational schools in Nepal since the early nineties, an adequate education of teachers was not possible within the country. This resulted in a lack of qualified personnel for the vocational schools and the quality of many apprenticeships did not meet today’s requirements. Many positions in the urban areas were taken by foreign workers and a lot of Nepalese were not able to find a job although they graduated from a vocational school.

The project – It is our aim to upgrade the ‘Training Institute for Technical Instruction’ (TITI) in Kathmandu to a centre for the education of vocational school teachers. For that purpose an apprenticeship program adjusted to the local needs and framework requirements was developed. Today teachers, curricula designers and principals are educated and qualified at TITI with a modular course program. The teacher’s diploma can be achieved besides working or in a full-time study. Vocational trainings in different enterprises from industry, agriculture and the health care sector are organized for teachers lacking practical experience in their field of knowledge. Furthermore short-term courses are offered for the private and the official sector. Around 5.000 individuals profited from the comprehensive course program. Since 1997 the education at TITI is binding for all teachers of governmentally recognized vocational schools. The course materials developed by TITI were adopted in the meantime by more than ten countries in Asia, Eastern Europe and Africa. Thus the institute received international attention and was honoured for its innovative methods of training by the “Indian Society for Training and Development” in 2006. In cooperation with the state agency for apprenticeship TITI engages in a sustainable advancement of Nepal’s apprenticeship system.
