Niger
Opportunities for unemployed youth
Background – Niger is according to the World Bank the poorest and least developed country in the world. Income, lifespan and rate of alphabetisation are as low as almost nowhere else. On the other hand the percentage of poor people and the population growth rate are high. Especially for youth future prospects are cheerless. Lacking school and vocational education are the beginning, wanting jobs the continuation of the way into poverty. Many try their luck in a foreign country; others turn to criminality and extremism.
The project – It is our aim to give unemployed youth new opportunities on the employment market with career courses with the duration of approximately one month to promote their integration into society. In cooperation with the national agency for vocational education and other NGOs in Niger we are developing modular courses in the food sector, motorcycle mechanics and tailoring. In every region courses in those sectors are offered that promise biggest potential. Besides practical knowledge for the chosen career reading and writing is part of the curriculum as well as topics around public health and emigration. After they finish the apprenticeship the youth receive advice and support for their job search. Graduates who want to go into business for themselves obtain personal consultancy and supervision. Local radio stations inform the population about the courses and clarify the necessity of apprenticeship. Our long-term aim is to integrate those activities into the national apprenticeship program as educated workforce is an effective instrument against poverty.
