Support our projects in Ecuador

Areas of collaboration - Swisscontact is involved in environmental protection in Ecuador and collaborates with the municipal authorities of Quito, Guayaquil and Cuenca. Its involvement includes the provision of an insight for authorities into environmental matters via seminars which are held by national and international experts. Herewith it shall be ensured that the authorities have the necessary knowledge to introduce appropriate legislative measures. In addition, in each of the three cities an environmental expert holds the task to advise authorities on technical aspects. With this the authorities' position shall be strengthened to put pressure on companies to make their production procedures more environment-friendly.

Another strategy is to help 28 laboratories specialised in environment monitoring to obtain quality certification for measuring harmful substances. This means that when necessary, authorities will have the facilities to effectively monitor the measures taken. A network of environmental consultants is currently being built up, so that if needed both the authorities and companies do have a contact person. In selected factories, exemplary presentations are given on how to convert legal directives into concrete measures. For example, support was given to a galvanisation plant in dealing with the disposal of industrial sludge produced during the process, after local authorities had imposed appropriate restrictions.
