Bolivia

Environmentally suitable disposal of clinical waste

Surrounding – Bolivia lies at the heart of Latin America and is the poorest country of the continent. Two thirds of Bolivians live in poverty, and many suffer from extremely poor educational levels, nutrition and health.

In big cities, especially, the quality of life is worsened by deficient hygiene. The waste of these cities is still stored on large dumps, which thousands of the poorest sift through day after day looking for recyclable goods. Infectious types of waste from hospitals and clinics are especially dangerous. Improper handling and disposal of these wastes leads to risk of infectious diseases for hospital personnel and anyone who comes into contact with them.

Project targets – Our target is to improve the quality of life in Bolivia sustainable. Correct handling and environmentally suitable disposal of dangerous clinic waste can protect properly all personnel in the hospitals and as well as those who pick through dumps.

Activities – We are operating pilot projects in integral waste management at three hospitals in La Paz, Cochabaamba, El Alto and Santa Cruz, providing consultation and education to the staff. The main focus is the task of separating hazardous and non-hazardous waste. We also promote the recycling of non-hazardous waste.
As soon as the project is implemented in the pilot hospitals, they pass their experiences on to other health institutions. Swisscontact escorts the implementation and supports the education measures: Waste management firms and operators of trash dumps were trained in appropriate disposal and financially supported to adjust their equipment. We furnish the hospitals with special containers for the storage of dangerous waste. On a regular basis the infectious wastes were picked up separately and brought to final storage. This is already established in two of the four cities.

Partners of Swisscontact – We currently work with the Bolivian Ministry of Health and the governments of La Paz, Chochabamba, El Alto and Santa Cruz, as well as with operators of trash dumps, waste management firms and twelve hospitals.
